Backup

The amount of data stored on ofice computers today is several times larger than it was two to three years ago. Program files alone can make up a considerable amount of storage space. Due to this one cannot afford to miss taking copies of all data just in case, the computer crashes. Unfortunately, many small business owners realise the importance only after important datd or time is lost while restoring data which is lost. You often have to deal with the nightmare of trying to bring a malfunctioning computer system back to normal using an out-of-date back up or no back up.

The good news is that back up is easy and inexpensive and a good tape drive and software to back up a stand alone computer can be bought under AED 300/-. Without a tape back up system it could take several hours to restore a system from original disks and it could cost consulting and maintenance fees as well.

We recommend all small business owners to buy a tape back up and use it regularly to backup you entire system. You can leave a computer running overnight to do backups than allow a bad crash. If you are planning to back up every day, buy at least five tapes so you can use different tapes on each day. Keep the tapes away from the computer to avoid risk of losing the backup as well. It is also advisable to take the tapes off site at least every Thursday so that you can save data even if the building where your computer is located is destroyed by fire etc.
